Manolo Blahnik: Artist and Cobbler

Manolo Blahnik: Artist and Cobbler

Footwear engineer, shoe designer, shoe manufacturing specialist: all these terms have been used to describe this greater designer who has made his name into a trademark of international repute.

First steps

With a Czech father and a mother from the Canary Islands, he had a peaceful childhood. Although as a young man he started to study International Law in Geneva (Switzerland), his interest in architecture and literature was evident at an early age. However, it was not until years later and now resident in Paris that he would acquire insights into fashion and styling through courses at the School of Fine Arts.

Travails in Paris

He found great friends among the art and fashion worlds from the very start of his time in Paris, among them Paloma Picasso, daughter of painter Pablo. These friendships gave him the chance to meet Diana Vreeland, editor of fashion bible Vogue at that time. This meeting would funnel him towards a future in designing footwear.

The road to fame

He opened his first shop in London in 1973 which set him on the road to success. Every year his shoes appear in the most important fashion magazines, on the feet of the most elegant women and inspire forthcoming collections among the highest selling firms. His designs have adorned the feet of many a celebrity, among them actresses like Sarah Jessica Parker. An avid fan, the actress has been wearing his designs ever since her time in 'Sex and the City'. The singer Madonna is another loyal customer, regularly slipping on Blahnik heels. This has enabled his name to resonate and become something desired by the public at large.

It's a Manolo

After 40 years in the business, this designer from the Canary Islands has created footwear that speaks for itself – everyone knows what you are talking about if you mention a pair of 'Manolo's'. This is undoubtedly a clear example of how dedication and innovation continue to be a fine recipe for success in the fashion world.
