Edith Head won more Oscars than any other woman

Eight statuettes and thirty-five Oscar nominations prove it. Edith Head (1897-1981), also known as "The Doctor", is one of the most prolific fashion designers in the film industry. Even Pixar gave her praise with the iconic Edna Mode’s character of The Incredibles (2004). They did not forget her iconic circular glasses, her hairstyle or her strong personality.

Origins

Edith Head was not always devoted to fashion. At first, after studying at the University of California, she was teaching French and Art. At age 26 she began working as a costume illustrator at Paramount Pictures. After designing Mae West's costume in Lady Lou (1933), she took her chance. Some years later she established herself as one of the leading costume designers until she passed away.

Some iconic designs

She introduced the prototypical dress of the golden age of Hollywood: strapless necklines with voluminous skirts, a very recognizable clothing that wore, for instance, her muse Grace Kelly. At the same time, she could create casual clothing. Thus, in Roman Holiday (1953) she decided upon soft tones or necklines that showed the neck of Audrey Hepburn.

The keys of her fashion work

Edith Head believed in style as her own personal branding and, in fact, her appearance was highly recognizable. The key: the search of a distinctive element (it could be it a haircut, a color, a pair of glasses, etc.) To develop her classic and timeless style, she did not copy the current fashion trends. To sum up, she also preferred to create her own pattern designs, which allowed her fitting her designs to the body perfectly.
